I have a little bit too much fun picking snails off of my lettuce and other seedlings. Sorry little guys, but we’re all competing for the same food. Lately, we’ve had some cool moist mornings and hunting has been particularly good. Even my neighbor is getting in on the action with his newly-acquired bug box (he’s 3). He recently asked if he could pick hunt snails and bugs in the garden and put them in his box. I’m delighted by this! He listened intently as I showed him the bugs to leave and the bugs that were fair game. He also showed me a little stink bug infestation growing on one of my cactus that I not yet detected. These were the death of my peppers and tomatoes last year, so I’m happy to have the help.
One of the little known facts that seemed to upset my little friend enough to make him segregate his snails, was that some snails eat other snails. It’s true! I’ve seen it. And, I took a photo. Here it is.
Amazingly, it’s the smaller snail eating the larger snail! So, there ya go ladies and gents…even the garden has it battles. And the biggest snail does not always win.
