Gardeners are hopeless exhibitionists. Even in the dead of summer, when there’s nothing in the garden but beans, okra and hot peppers, we just love to show off. A couple of weeks ago we had our first Yard to Market Garden Party Potluck. These parties are a chance for our members, their friends and families, and anybody interested in learning more about the co-op to come together, get a peek at a member garden, and share a meal. Our menu this time around included gumbo, quiche, pot roast, melon and purslane salad, bean salad, couscous salad, and a pineapple upside-down cake!
In addition to nerding out on gardening generally, we always have two items on the agenda for these parties: a co-op education topic and a gardening resource. This month our topic was Getting to Know the Board of Directors. Our August resource was Tools. We received several generous donations recently of tools, pots, wheelbarrows and hoses and boy howdy do we have lots of them. Stay tuned for more opportunities to borrow, buy and trade!
I was the host this month, and we toured my frontyard and backyard gardens as well as my small chicken coop. We chatted about what’s growing, what’s looking funny, and what’s going in for the fall season. Here’s the gang posing in the okra patch!
Our next Garden Party is scheduled for September 13th . You’re invited! Our topic will be Ends Policies Part II and our resource will be Seeds! We’re holding a seed swap and we’ll have some fall seed combo packs for sale as well. Whether you’re a member of the co-op, a customer, or just curious to learn more, contact firstname.lastname@example.org to join us!
